Sign in and confirm your phone

Stay n Host has no passwords. You prove who you are with something you already have: your mailbox, your Google account, or your Microsoft work or school account. Because there is no password, there is nothing to forget and nothing to reset.

Screen /signin · Roles: everyone
  • Continue with Google. Uses your Google account. The address Google confirms must be the address your seat was created for.
  • Continue with Microsoft. For a Microsoft 365 work or school account. A personal Outlook or Hotmail account is usually refused; use Google or the emailed link instead. Details in Sign in with Microsoft.
  • An emailed sign-in link. Type your address under Or get a sign-in link by email and press Email me a link. Open the email and press Sign in.

Whichever way you use, you land in the same seat, as long as the email address is the same.

Section titled “The emailed link only works where you asked for it”

A sign-in link opens on the same device, in the same browser, where you requested it. Requested it on your laptop but opened the email on your phone? It will not sign you in there; ask for a new link on the phone instead. This is deliberate: someone who gets hold of your email cannot use the link from their own computer.

Each link works once and then expires. If you press an old one, the page says “That sign-in link has expired or has already been used. Request a new one.”

Everyone on a team must have a phone number the workspace can reach out of hours, and we check it is really yours. The first time you sign in without a confirmed number, you see One thing before you continue instead of the app:

  1. Type your number, including the country code (for example +1).
  2. Press Send code. We text you a 6-digit code.
  3. Type it and press Verify. You see “Phone number verified.” and the app opens.

This is asked once. A number that was on file before codes existed (or that whoever invited you typed in) still needs the code, and the screen says so.

Good to know about codes:

  • A code works for 10 minutes, and five wrong tries end it. Send a new one if it expires.
  • Resend code unlocks after a minute (the button counts down).
  • You can ask for five codes a day. After that, try again tomorrow.
  • Where it is set up, Send on WhatsApp instead sends the same code on WhatsApp (and Send by SMS instead switches back).
  • Change number lets you fix a typo before you verify.
  • A number already verified on another person’s account is refused. Use your own.

To change your number later, click your own email and role in the app’s navigation rail to open Your profile, type the new number, and confirm it with a code.

The phone check also covers the API: a key made by someone with no confirmed number is refused with phone_required until they confirm it. See Connect other systems with API keys.

You stay signed in as long as you use Stay n Host at least once a week. After 7 days without using it, you sign in again. Signing out on a shared computer ends the session straight away.

The first time you enter a workspace, and whenever the terms change, the app may show Before you continue with the terms to accept. See Accept the platform terms.

The sign-in link never came.

  • Check spam or junk, and search your mail for the sign-in email.
  • Make sure you typed the address your seat was created for. For security the page never says whether an address has an account, so a typo looks the same as success.
  • Ask for a new link, on the device and in the browser you will open it in.
  • Still nothing? Use Continue with Google or Continue with Microsoft if your address works with one of them, or ask an admin of your workspace to check your seat.

The link says it was requested from a different device or browser. Ask for a new link in the browser you are using now, and open it there.

The text-message code never came.

  • Check the number and the country code. Use Change number to fix it.
  • Wait for Resend code to unlock, then press it.
  • Try Send on WhatsApp instead, if it is offered.
  • If the page says codes cannot be sent right now, try again a little later.

You were invited but cannot sign in yet. Open the invitation email first and press Accept invitation. See Invite a teammate.

You did not forget it: there is no password, so there is nothing to reset or recover. If you forgot how you signed in, ask for a sign-in link by email, or use Google or Microsoft with the same address. An old “reset password” link from before passwordless sign-in now just opens the sign-in page.
